Circular labyrinth in a desert landscape with mountains and trees.

Labyrinth

What is a labyrinth?

A labyrinth is a walking meditation tool used by seekers of the divine.

It is a one way path-one path into the center and one path out again. There are no dead ends or places to get lost as there is in a maze. One should look at the walk as a three-part process: purgation, illumination, and union.

Purgation or letting go is experienced on the walk from the entrance to the center rosette. During this time one should set aside all worldly concerns, let go of all those things you try to control, empty and quiet your mind.

Illumination is experienced in the center rosette. Walk in with an open heart and open mind to receive what is there to receive. Listen for "the still small voice of God." You can stand or sit for as long as you need. When you are ready to leave, follow the same path back out of the labyrinth.

Union is experienced on the walk out. It is a time to integrate what you experienced in the center with what action you are willing to take in behalf of the Divine in the world.
